For those who use Oracle while running Amazon EC2,have good news going into the new year. Using the web service, customers will be able to run a large assortment of apps using the VM templates. Amazon is hoping that this progress will allow clients to get settled into the cloud quicker, and more efficiently. Oracle's AMIs can be used as they are, or more savvy programmer can customize them.

With the launch of Oracle Cloud Office, and Open Office, Amazon is letting customers utilize more apps for Amazon EC2 in the future. Teaming up with Oracle, Amazon released pre-configured AMIs which will allow clients to get instant access, instead of programming a way in.

Jeff Barr, senior manager of cloud-computing solutions at Amazon, said this of the announcement, "The application AMIs are all based on Oracle Linux and run on 64-bit high-memory Relevant Products/Services instances atop the Oracle VM."

You can use them as-is or you can create derivative versions tuned to your particular needs. We'll start out in one region and add more in the near future."

Here are some apps which will be available immediately with AMIs on EC2: Peoplesoft apps, Oracle's E-Business Suite apps, and JD Edwards Enterprise One apps. These apps will be utilized alongside Amazon's already advantageous features.

Plans for this development have been in talks for quite some time, but now all the licensing issues have been taken care of. Barr continued on about the new advancement, "We implemented Oracle VM support on Amazon EC2 with hard partitioning so Oracle's standard partitioned processor licensing models apply."

"All of these applications are certified and supported by Oracle. Customers with active Oracle support and Amazon premium support will be able to contact either Amazon or Oracle for support."
